Kagifa Samoa captain Leon Fukofuka believes his side has what it takes to make a big impact in the 2019 Global Rapid Rugby Pacific Showcase Series and knows victory over the Western Force would be a watershed moment in the new side’s short history.
Fukofuka was a key player in Kagifa Samoa’s opening game a fortnight ago with his leadership important in a squad that had only come together for a few sessions ahead of the game. While the dominos didn’t fall in their favour in that match, he said the time spent together since, coupled with a strong belief in each other, has the team primed for another crack.
“We’re really excited actually, especially after the experience of playing this new style of game against Fiji, all of the boys are really keen to get back out and play this Rapid Rugby again,” Fukofuka said.
“I think we’re coming together as a team, you can only get better the more time that you spend with each other. The boys are really fizzing for the game tonight.”
The former Crusaders scrumhalf said the new law interpretations in Rapid Rugby take some adjustment.
“Oh yeah, especially not being able to kick the ball out on the full. You have to dig deep and work harder as you go through the game,” Fukofuka said.
While confident in his side’s ability he isn’t underestimating the challenge in front of them tonight and is calling on all Pacific Islanders to come out and support Kagifa Samoa.
“The Western Force are an awesome team, especially around the rules, they’ve really nailed them. They have heaps of workhorses, so it’ll be a big test,” said Fukofuka.
“It would be awesome if we could get as many Pacific Islanders come out and support our team, it would mean a lot. We’ve had great support so far and we want to keep building our fan base.”
